Annual Sport Day

In our Bye-Laws” To organize sports, games, rallies and other social activities for its members and their families have been mentioned as one of the activities of the association. We have been contemplating to follow this activity and celebrate a sports day for the alumni and their family members. It is only in 2017, we are able to achieve this. The Sports Committee was formed with Er. Sundaram Parthasarathy of 1976 Batch. The EC was gracious enough to allocate funds for this event. To all credit to Er.Sundaram Parthasarathy, the event was conducted with the full support of other members of the committee. It has been decided by the Association to conduct the Alumni Sports Day every year.

Celebration of Alumni Sports Day in 2017 :-

As you may all be aware, the sports and games of the Alumni Association was kick-started on September 2, 2017 with the Table Tennis and Carrom tournaments. The Tennis tournament started on September 6 and the single-wicket tennis ball Cricket Tournament was held on September 9. The Shuttle and Chess tournaments were held from September 12. All these tournaments were completed by September 15. The participation was not to the level expected, but what is praiseworthy is the enthusiasm with which the Septuagenarians viz. N. Ramanathan, K. Venkatraman and S. Subramanian participated. We hope, this will encourage the younger alumni to participate next year in large numbers.

The Annual Sports Day was held on the September 17 at the Anna University (CEG) grounds. The programme started at 3.00 pm with the traditional games viz. Bamparam, Goli, Gilli Thandu, Innovative cooking and Kolam competition. Here again what was astonishing was the number of older people who came forward to participate. This was followed by Catapult and running /walking races for senior citizens, men and women below 55 years of age, boys and girls. All the traditional events and the races witnessed good participation and one could say that these events were a great crowd puller and hence a success. The icing on the cake was the running commentary by V. Srinath, which was hilarious and informative. He even interviewed the participants to make it more interesting.
Though arrangements were made at the grounds (stage, etc. were erected) the Prize distribution ceremony, had to be shifted indoors, to the Alumni Association Hall, as the Rain Gods who permitted the games to be conducted smoothly, lost patience at the very end. Nevertheless, the event went off very well. The Chief Guest Mr. N.Kumar (Vice- Chairman Sanmar Group) an Alumnus of the College who came promptly at 5.30 pm, witnessed some of the games and even indicated that he would have participated in some of them, had he known earlier that these traditional games were to be held.

Some of the trophies depicted the games for which they were being awarded and others were cups. A Total of 82 trophies were distributed by the chief guest. Approximately, 250 people attended the presentation ceremony which concluded as planned by 7.00 PM and was followed by dinner at the College Mess. The dinner, as usual, was of high quality and was enjoyed by the invitees.

The Sports Committee wishes to thank and place on record, the President, Vasudevan for his unstinted enthusiasm, the Chairman – Anna University Sports Board, Dr. Selladurai and the Asst. Physical Director –Mr. Bala Ganesh for granting permission to use the Anna University Sports and Games facilities for the conduct of the events. We also express our sincere thanks to Ganesan, Registrar Anna University and TV Geetha , Dean CEG for extending their support and the Alumni Office ( Idayaventhan, Srinivasan and Vivek), for providing the back office support.
Our special thanks to D. Ranganathan and T. Swaminathan the President and Secretary of the Alumni Club respectively for allowing us the use of the premises. The Sports Committee, Convener Sundaram Parthasarathi wishes to place on record the fantastic work done by V. Ravindran, M.T. Ganesh Babu, M. Sekar, C.R. Ravi and K.P. Shankar (all of 1976 batch) without whom this event would not have been a success.

Finally, we thank all the participants of the various events and request the alumni and their family to come in greater numbers, to take part in the next year’s Sports and Games.
